Psalm for the Election of a Pope
It should perhaps come as no surprise that there is an official mass and set of readings for when one needs to pray for the election of a pope. (Lectionary 832.2)
In light of the events in the wake of Easter, and presupposing that many parishes around the world will be celebrating this same mass prior to or during the conclave, I have decided to share my setting of Psalm 89, “Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.” with the appropriate verses prescribed by the lectionary for this particular occasion.
This setting is based on Misericordias Domini in æternum cantabo… as found in a 12th century Cistercian Antiphonale.
May our Lord, in His clemency and mercy, grant us a good and holy pope to renew Holy Mother Church.
While it is usually my habit to have full S/A/T/B practice tracks prepared, I currently only have a Cantor demo for this psalm—and the recording features different verses prescribed by another entry in the lectionary. Nevertheless, it is still sufficient to help someone learn the setting.
Peace, and a blessèd Eastertide to all—
James
