Would you like to be my (internet) neighbor?
Thus kicks off the new Psallite Domino (“Sing to the Lord”) blog. I’m starting this blog to serve as a haven for honest discussion about everything pertaining to Catholicism, with a special emphasis on liturgy and liturgical music.
I find myself relating very strongly to a sentiment once expressed by St. Catherine of Sienna in a letter to a “great prelate”:
Be silent no more! Cry out with one hundred thousand tongues. I see that, because of this silence, the world is in ruins, the Spouse of Christ has grown pale; the color is taken from Her face because Her blood has been sucked out, that is the Blood of Christ, which is given as a free gift and not by right.
Let us be silent no more about the issues facing the Church today. (Many of which manifest in bad theology and excruciating liturgies.) There are many competing voices vying for our attention today, seeking to sell us a spoiled bill of goods. I’m going to speak truth in my little corner of the world as best I can. But I’m not content to only discuss the issues facing the church; I also want to discuss its treasures! The sweet things that make eternal balm for the soul.
The last few years have seen me delve very deeply into my faith (and literally devote my life to it as a full-time church musician). As I’ve studied I’ve found myself crying over and over again:
“Why has no one ever told me this before!? This is amazing!”
Now I hope I can bring you along for the ride. I hope you’ll join me in this journey of heritage discovery and frank discussion of “hard truths”—so desperately needed.
Until next time, may we sing to the Lord always—literally and figuratively!
