22nd Sunday in OT

Musical ordo for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen IN.

Thanks again for a wonderful rehearsal on Wednesday. We powered through quite a bit of music in spite of my harried preparation. Thank you!

Here is our ordo for OT 22:

  • Ordinary: Mass in Honor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, by Michæl Olbash

  • Entrance Antiphon Hymn: “Have mercy, Lord, on Me.” (Tune: Conditor Alme Siderum) followed immediately by:

    • Fr. Weber1439

  • Psalm 15 “The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”

  • Alleluia Sancte Jacobe — we will sing the verse unison a cappella just like last week.

  • Offertory Chant: Fr. Weber 1447 — Don’t forget that we changed the notes on the word “down” (which is shown in the video). Sorry I sound so stuffy.

  • Communion Chant: Fr. Weber #1453 — don’t forget we will pair verses 1&2, and 3&4 (men odd, women even) between repetitions of the refrain.

  • Communion Motet: Cantate Domino

  • Communion Hymn: Just as I am — I believe we sang this particular hymn one other time (the text is familiar, the melody less-so)

  • Recessional Hymn: Maria, Maria! — this is a Czech hymn that we did relatively recently (sometime this summer). We will only do two verses.

See you Sunday morning at 10:25!

21st Sunday in OT

Musical ordo for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessèd Virgin Mary, 2021, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen IN.

May I first say that you all did an excellent job your first Sunday back! We are still finding our voice; I sense we all feel a little rusty, but you still sang very well and both of our priests were happy hearing you sing again. Fr. Royce also thought we did a particularly lovely job on the psalm. Thank you!

Here is our ordo for OT 21:

  • Ordinary: Mass in Honor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, by Michæl Olbash

  • Entrance Antiphon Hymn: “Turn Your ear, O Lord.” (Tune: Austrian Hymn, a.k.a. “Glorious things of Thee are spoken” *If you listen to this piano rendition, change the speed to .75x)

  • Psalm 34: “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord”

  • Alleluia Sancte Jacobe (the track below is an S(A/T)B recording where I sing the verse for the solemnity of the Assumption, however the notes are obviously the same for this week).

  • Offertory Chant: With expectation I have waited…” (a.k.a. Exspectans exspectavi)

  • Communion Chant: Fr. Weber #1430

  • Communion Motet: “Humbly I Adore Thee” — McDonough

  • Communion Hymn: Tantum Ergo but with alternate translation

  • And lastly, Salve Regina

See you Sunday morning at 10:20!

Assumption of the Blessèd Virgin Mary

Musical ordo for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessèd Virgin Mary, 2021, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen IN.

Greetings choir! It’s so exciting that we are finally able to start singing again! I am so grateful to all of you who returned this week. Here is our ordo:

  • Entrance Antiphon Hymn: “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken” (sung to PLEADING SAVIOUR a.k.a. “Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly”)

  • Ordinary: Mass in Honor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, by Michæl Olbash

  • Psalm 45 “The Queen stands at Your right hand, arrayed in gold.”

    • NB: I slightly tweaked the rhythm of the refrain on the advice of another composer. I have also made a new version of the score that has each column with the notes fully fleshed out so it is easier to follow. The practice track below has the full complement of SATB solos to help you hear your parts.

  • Alleluia Sancte Jacobe (the track below is an S(A/T)B recording and I sing the verse for the solemnity to help you hear it.

  • Offertory Chant: “Mary has been taken up into heaven” (a.k.a. Assumpta est Maria)

  • Communion Chant: “All generations shall call me blessèd” (a.k.a. Beatam me dicent)

  • Communion Motet: “O Maria Virgo Pia” (NB: the practice track is from two years ago; it is organ only but it does have each part dubbed out if you need it.)

  • Communion Hymn: “I Hunger and I Thirst” (tune: Mosely, alt.)

    • In this practice video I sing each part in succession on the syllable “la”.

  • And lastly, Immaculate Mary (from the hymnal).

See you Sunday morning at 10:20!

Corpus Christi

Ordo for the Feast of Corpus Christi (2021) • St. John the Evangelist Goshen

Greetings all,
We have an exciting roundup for the Feast of Corpus Christi!

First, our Mass music:

Entrance Hymn: In Thy True Presence Here (eucharistic text with the hymn tune linked below)

Entrance Antiphon: Fr. Weber 1749 (immediately after the entrance hymn / during incense)

Psalm: 116 • “I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.”

Sequence!!

(Weirdly, this was the best version I could find. I’ll make a different one for next year.)

Alleluia:

Offertory Antiphon: Simple English Propers (printout)

Communion Antiphon: Simple English Propers (worship aid)

Communion Motet “Hymn”: Anima Christi by Marco Frisina. The melody of the refrain is printed in the worship aid for people to sing along.

At the end of Mass we have a special procedure: Father will first purify the sacred vessels whilst we sing the Frisina, and then he will place the pyx into the mostrance on the altar. He will then return to the presider’s chair where he will say the closing prayer. At that time he will proceed to vest in a cope (cape) and humeral veil (special shoulder shroud that he uses to pick up the monstrance) whilst we sing the familiar hymn O Salutaris Hostia. (We will sing this version which is slightly different than you are used to.) The procession will then begin and we will follow him out of the church.

Procession

We will alternate with the Hispanic choirs singing between stops of the procession. We will sing the following works during the procession:

  1. Adoro Te Devote plainchant (you can sing this in your sleep!)

  2. Cor Jesu Sacratissimum — make sure you prepare if you weren’t at rehearsal Wednesday, since we will sing it a cappella. I will start it by intoning the melody of the refrain, which we will then repeat à la psalm and then proceed to alternate with the chanted verses. Remind me to give you notes about lifts in the verses Sunday morning.

Upon returning into the church, Father will lead us in chanting the Tantum Ergo. Then we’ll be done! Please leave your folders in the cabinet if you can, and return any copies of Fr. Weber that you have. I need to take inventory to see which books are missing. We will reconvene for an informal choir Sunday later in June, but we’ll enjoy a couple of weeks off until then.

If anyone would like to cantor, let me know!
