Ash Wednesday 2022

Greetings all—

As a reminder, mass will be in English at 5:30pm. I know that this is an awkward time; just get there when you can, and we will do the best we can. I will be in the loft around 5pm to warmup with those who are able to come ahead of time.

I also hope to do some minimal prep for the following Sunday (Lent I) after Mass, in the youth room with those who can stick around a few extra minutes.

  • Entrance Antiphon: Fr. Weber (transcription into modern notation)
NB: I’m including the old (not so nice) video from two years ago that has the modern-note notation (which we will sing from) as well as a nicer video made today that actually has the square notes and a much better recording).

  • Psalm: 51 “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.”

  • Gospel Acclamation: “Salvation, glory, and power, to the Lord Jesus Christ!” This is new this year, and is based on the offertory chant for Lent II, Meditabor in mandatis tuis, or, “I will meditate on Your commandments…” (which seems a rather fitting genesis, considering this immediately precedes the proclamation of the gospel!).

NB: the decision to stay unison for the first half of the refrain is a deliberate, and in keeping with the restrained sobriety called for in Lenten rubrics. We only burst into harmony at the name of Christ, Who deserves all praise. The verses will be sung unison, and we may likely alternate m/w week to week.

  • Distribution of Ashes: Fr. Weber Antiphons (transcribed to modern notation)
(I will cantor the second one, so you can ignore it in the video. Also, I apologize for the quality which isn’t so great… this was when I was first getting started…)

  • Distribution of Ashes Special: Miserere Mei by Lotti if we have critical mass.

  • Offertory Hymn: Lord Who Throughout These Forty Days

  • Communion Antiphon: Fr. Weber #357

  • Communion Hymn: Parce Domine

We will be singing Mass XVIII as I warned you Wednesday, but I have the scores in the worship aid, which you can preview here.

8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ordo for the 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C (2022) at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen, IN.

(2022)

  • Ordinary: Olbash

  • Entrance Antiphon Hymn Tune: NETTLETON

  • Entrance Antiphon: Fr. Weber 1113

  • Psalm 92: “Lord, it is good to give thanks to You.”
I apologize all, but I simply ran out of time in regards to making a video and tracks. (And I even worked an extra half day on what should have been my day off.) This basic recording will have to do. It is just a quick once through with the organ so you can hear the harmonies. Melody only on the refrain. You can view the PDF here.

  • Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia for the Feast of Christ the King
We will do what I think of as our “fun alleluia” one last time before Lent, including the special coda. Kathy will cantor the verse.

  • Offertory Hymn: O death, where is thy sting? Sung to the tune of : DARWALL.

  • Communion Motet: None
(Considering the number of people missing and the rather rough rehearsal that it turned out to be, we will take it a little easy this Sunday.)

  • Communion Hymn: O God of Love, O King of Peace to the tune of HAMBURG.

  • Recessional Hymn: Alleluia, Song of Gladness. Sung to the tune ALLELUIA DULCE CARMEN.

There will be a procession of an effigy of the alleluia while we sing this hymn. Hopefully people will remember it from last week and belt it out.

You can view a draft of the worship aid (which includes the hymns not handed out at rehearsal) here.

PS—Ash Wednesday is March 2, and we have the 5:30pm Mass… (sorry…) Usual conditions apply: we’ll do the best we can; get there when you can. I’d like to stick around for a few minutes after mass to go over the psalm for the following Sunday, if you’re able.

PPS—I’ve changed the navigation bar at the top of the website a little bit, so now if you ever visit my website and want to find the choir ordo pages, you can click on the “other resources” tab, and there’s a drop down for this blog feed. Previously these pages were semi-hidden and you needed to already have the link to find them. Now you can navigate here whenever you feel the desire to do so.

PPPS—I will make one of these pages for Ash Wednesday no later than Sunday morning.

Extra credit for those of you who want to put in a little extra practice (especially those of you who couldn’t make it Wednesday): here is the Gospel Acclamation we will use this Lent.

(2022)

  • Ordinary: Olbash

  • Entrance Antiphon Hymn Tune: LAND OF REST (a.k.a. “Jerusalem, my happy home”)

  • Entrance Antiphon: Simple English Propers
NB: dont forget that the men will sing the first half of verse 1, and women will sing the second half beginning at “how long must I…” but there is a ‘flex’ on the first line. (This is demonstrated in the recording and video.)

  • Psalm 103: “The Lord is kind and merciful.”

  • Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia V

  • Offertory Hymn: Offertory Antiphon Text, sung to the tune of Tallis’ Third Mode Melody. Click here to view the score.

  • Our Father (Roman tone transcription)

  • Communion Antiphon: Fr. Weber #1104
NB: I have re-printed this for the choir with corrected verses. You will not need your Fr. Weber books at all this weekend. Click here to view the corrected version.

  • Communion Motet: Cantate Domino by Pitoni
NB: we will sing it through twice, as is our custom.

  • Communion Hymn: Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven. Sung to the tune ALLELUIA DULCE CARMEN. Click here to view the score.

NB: learn this harmonization well, as we will repeat it next Sunday for the “burial of the alleluia”. (Also, I apologize that there is a bit of a delay at the start of each track.)

PS—Ash Wednesday is March 2, and we have the 5:30pm Mass… (sorry…) Usual conditions apply: we’ll do the best we can; get there when you can.

PPS—I’ve recently spoken to Doug. He said that he is able to walk more and is regaining some feeling and function in his left hand, the latter of course being a rather huge development. Please keep praying for him.
