This piece is conceived in free time with some relative rhythms. The accompaniment provides almost a ritournello of sorts, while a flute soars above the steady accompaniment. Each performer is granted wide latitude in interpretation, and each performance should be adjusted to suit the organ & room at hand. It is best recommended for rooms with large acoustics.
(NB: the “double whole” notes with laissez vibrer ties are akin to reciting tones, and last as long as required and until new notes take their place.)
