Looking Ahead: Confirmation 2023

As promised at rehearsal, here’s a list of resources to prepare for confirmation Mass next week.

Dum Sanctificatus (procession of the confirmands)

All the voice parts are time stamped in the same video.

Psalm 117 (same as above; all the parts are time stamped in the same video)

Here’s an organ-only practice track of the Alleluia. NB: there are timestamps for each part, including a slowed-down version of the coda starting seven-and-a-half minutes in. You can click on these time stamps for your part and you will hear the organ play your part louder than the others.

And here is a human demo where it goes right into the coda, short and sweet. Each part is time stamped.

Don’t forget: there will be long organ interludes between each verse of the Veni Creator Spiritus.

For Lead Me, Lord, first we have an organ-only practice track that solos out each part, followed by a lovely real choral rendition with organ, and a second that is a cappella, which is quite interesting.

Notice how warm and gentle this sounds.

Suddenly, there was heard… (Communion antiphon)

Qui vult venire post me (He who wishes to come after me)

Any sopranos feel like learning a descant?

Alright gang…

I’m sorry to have called rehearsal on Wednesday, however we were going to have more people missing than we would have even had at rehearsal, and of those who would have attended, at least two felt sub-par to begin with.

We will still sing on Sunday, however you will have to do some prep-work at home (particularly the psalm and communion hymn) and we will have a simpler day than we would ordinarily.

Here’s our lineup:

  1. Entrance Antiphon Hymn to “Lauda Anima

  2. Introit: Fr. Weber 1549

  3. Psalm 80 “The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Isræl.”

  4. Alleluia VI

  5. Offertory Hymn to Irby (last week’s communion hymn)

  6. Communio: Fr. Weber 1562

  7. Communion Hymn: Come Down, O Love Divine to “Down Ampney”

  8. Salve Regina

Please note that the Fr. Weber handouts are in square note notation. This week was going to be our first week back to all-square-notes, so do brace yourself for the transition. It’s really not scary, especially if you learn the chants by ear first.

Nota bene: it is worth getting to know this hymn fairly well, as it will be our communion hymn for Confirmation on Friday, October 27th.

10/3/2023 rehearsal prep

Hello Friends—

I cannot always promise such a thing, but it occurred to me today, and I have a minute, so I’d like to list a few things here, that you can listen to ahead of Wednesday’s rehearsal. For those of you who are able to avail yourselves of these tracks, this might help you feel a little more comfortable at rehearsal.

Here are a few of the things we will be working on:

1. • O Sacrum Convivium

2. • Solemn Salve Regina (with drones)

3. • Dum Sanctificatus (Confirmation introit)

4. • Fr. Weber 1549

5. • Fr. Weber 1562

6. • Magnificat in C by George Dyson

Hi Friends— Here’s our Ordo for this weekend.

PS: There is more than one way to engage with these practice tracks. The first is to simply listen. This is good to help you get your part in your ear, but that can only take you so far. The second is to actually sing along with them. This helps you synthesize making your muscles do the right thing at the right time.

There are many pieces of organ music that I “know” aurally, but not physically to play. Make sure you don’t only passively listen, with the end result being you don’t actually know how to sing your part!

PPS: for an extra gold star, don’t merely sing along with your own part—sing along with one of the other parts, so you don’t have anyone covering your part in your ear. For example, after you’ve learned your part and you’re an Alto, try singing along with the tenor or bass track and see how you get on. The results may surprise you!

Lastly—I’ve included the mp3’s for most things below, if you don’t want to deal with YouTube adds. Below the list of mp3’s is an embedded YT video. The video that is displayed is the SATB version of whatever the piece is, but it is an embedding of the playlist, so you can cycle through the list of videos by clicking on the little three-line icon in the upper right (at least on PC’s)
